Austrian woman kayakist injured in K-1 heats

The preliminaries of the men's C-2 and the women's K-1 of the "Good Luck Beijing" Canoe/Kayak Slalom Open were staged on August 18. In the women's K-1 heats, Corinna Kuhnle from Austria injured her cervical vertebra accidentally and was immediately sent to the hospital for treatment.

In the women's K-1 second run, Corinna Kuhnle unexpectedly capsized her boat and got injured. After the race, Corinna Kuhnle went ashore by herself, and after briefly telling her coach and the medical staff present what had happened she was rushed by an ambulance to the China-Japan Friendship Hospital for observation and treatment.

Corinna Kuhnle participated in today's K-1 heats as Austria's only woman paddler.  Having finished her second run, she went ashore before receiving any instructions from the judge at the boat inspection zone. Later as she was not feeling well while sitting on the grass, so her coach asked her to lie down and wait to be treated by the first-aid team at the venue. The doctor arrived within one minute, and after some emergency treatment Corinna Kuhnle was carried to the first-aid room nearby on a stretcher with her neck fixed properly. In a few minutes the Austrian paddler was sent by an ambulance to the China-Japan Friendship Hospital for further treatment.

The event organizing committee soon called an emergency press conference on Corinna Kuhnle's injury. According to the medical manager of the tournament, Corinna Kuhnle was receiving further examination at the hospital and the condition of her injury would not be decided until the result of further examination is released tomorrow.

It was learned that Corinna Kuhnle had injured her neck before and came to compete in the current tournament with the injury. Her coach once advised her not to take the risk, but in order to be familiar with the course, she still decided to come. So far, the organizing committee has not released any official information on Corinna Kuhnle's injury.
