The hope for men's C2 favorites Hu Minghai and Shu Junrong of China to enter semifinal of the "Good Luck Beijing" Canoe/Kayak Slalom Open dimmed after their boat overturned in the first round qualifier this afternoon at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.
Among the 13 pair contestants, Hu and Shu started at the seventh place. Their boat was lifted by the torrent at the no.14 gate and thus they only managed to end up in the last position in 176.56 seconds, 73 seconds later than the first and hardly make to the 10 semifinalists.
Hu and Shu, both under 20, have been grouped for four years. They show huge potential of the sport as the duo won the C2 bronze medal at the 2007 World Cup in Prague—China's first medal of the event and finished eighth in the Augsburg leg later this year.
Hu/Shu's current world ranking is 13th with the other two Chinese pairs in the event at 28th and 53rd. |
