The first Beijing-based event of the "Good Luck Beijing" sport series is to be inaugurated on August 7, 2007, with Beijing's Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park as the competition venue. As the city's first newly-built Olympic venue to be used, the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park will host three sport events in August, namely the FISA 2007 World Rowing Junior Championships, 2007 Canoe/Kayak Slalom Open and Canoe/Kayak Flatwater Open.

32 gold medals will find their final owners at next year's Olympic Games, and the park will become the third largest gold-born area after the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube.

This morning, the Shunyi District Olympic Venues Administrative Commission and the Beijing Olympic Organization Committee (BOCOG) jointly held a press conference to inaugurate the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.

Convenient Transportation

The Baima Road connecting the downtown area with the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park has been put into use on June 30. It is now only an hour's drive from downtown Beijing to the park.

According to Li Yousheng, deputy chief of Shunyi District and executive president of the "Good Luck Beijing" rowing-canoeing events organizing committee, by year 2008 it will only take 30 minutes to drive from the Olympic Village to the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. As an Olympic avenue, Baima Road boasts three greening sections, namely Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics, which will respectively showcase the area's suburb scenery and green landscape as well as the natural ecological environment of its sci-tech zone.

Zero discharge of wastewater

As the world's only water sports venue for both canoe/kayak slalom and flatwater competitions, the Shunyi Aquatic Park has a water surface area of 640,000 square meters, a greening area of 580,000 square meters, and an artificial flatwater course of 2,272 meters running from south to north. The venue, designed for energy saving and environmental protection, boasts the largest recycling water treatment system and tail water processing station in China, which are aimed at zero discharge of wastewater while ensuring high water quality to meet the needs of the Olympic Games.

According to Li Dan, chief architect of the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, with the completion of their underground recycling water processing system, about 72,000 tons of wastewater can be cleansed through biological membrane every day, and the water in the entire course can be fully cleansed in a matter of 35 days.

Natural oxygen bar

Thanks to the painstaking efforts made by the local government in renovating the nearby Chaobai River Forest Park and Xiangyang Reservoir area, the Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park has now become a large natural oxygen bar, with a greening rate of over 82% and a water surface of 640,000 square meters.
